Waihe'e Ridge Trail and Nā-kālele Blowhole

20181108

On the next day, I drove the SUV that Nathaniel's parents had rented from the western side of Maui to the northern side. While the roads on Maui are winding overall, these roads continuously worsened, from four-lane highways to two-lane roads to single-lane paved roads and ultimately to bumpy unpaved roads of a single car's width. This was the first time I'd driven on such roads (next to a deathly cliff, no less!), and rightly with a lot of caution.

We began hiking upwards from the car park, leading to some stunning views of the ocean and the northern shore of Maui. Very soon, we ascended to the bottom of the clouds, so the blue sky was no longer visible. When we reached the summit, the mist was so thick that we could not see much else beyond our immediate path. Unfortunately, that also meant that the ultimate panorama was totally obscured from view.

Despite being very hungry after the hike, we decided to visit Nakalele Blowhole on the way back, where waves are forced through a small hole in the volcanic rocks to produce tall plumes. The cliffs and rainbows made it worth all the while.
