Lāhainā Pali Trail

20181028

Right after Nat visited me in Berkeley, I flew to Hawaii to join Nathaniel's family for a vacation on Maui. After seeing a blood-orange moon rising in the pitch-black night sky, distorted on the horizon by atmospheric refraction, I arrived in Maui in the evening.

What greeted me the next morning was a stunning view of the clear Pacific seawater, a couple of sailboats, as well as an enormous Lanai Island in the distance, rising into a layer of white clouds. Having had a (quite expensive) breakfast, we decided to hike on the Lahaina Pali trail, on the west side of Maui. This is the dry side of Maui, making the trail look somewhat Californian. The top of the hill is lined with rows of whizzing wind turbines, and naturally it was very windy. From here, we could see Haleakala in the east, the other volcano that makes up Maui.

The sunset that evening was one of the most beautiful I have seen. As I was taking a time lapse, the sky rapidly changed colours, from yellow to bright orange to red to purple and finally to a calm dark blue.
